CORINTHE - CORINTH
Le fameux canal de Corinthe qui relie la mer Ionienne à la mer Égée. Construit entre 1882 et 1893, à l'initiative des Français, il mesure 6,343m de long et 21m de large. La tranchée atteint une profondeur maximale de 52m. La première tentative de construction du canal est attribuée à Néron en 67, qui inaugura les travaux avec une pelle en or. Elle mobilisa 6.000 prisonniers juifs envoyés par Vespasien. L'année suivante, à la mort de Néron, son successeur Galba abandonna le projet, jugé trop onéreux.
